Export regions

Annatto is an orange-red colouring matter taken from the coating around the seeds of an American shrub. It can be shipped in prepared cakes or rolls, rather than as whole fruits.

It is used to colour skin, food and some textiles. The seeds are worked to separate the colouring matter, which is collected and dried. A merchant handles a concentrated plant product: the prickly capsules and red-coated seeds that produced it have been left behind.
