Persian black cumin is an aromatic spice with slender, dark, elongated grains. The harvested fruits are dried for trade, leaving a compact cargo that a spice merchant or apothecary can examine by its shape and scent.

Nigella is also sold as black cumin, but its small black seeds are more angular. A buyer choosing ingredients for a preparation needs to recognise the seed itself: similar names do not make the two spices interchangeable.
