This heavy cotton sailcloth, known in French as cotonnine, is used for galley sails. It comes aboard already woven, ready for a sailmaker to measure, cut and sew into panels.

The strength and evenness of the weave matter more than its appearance: this fabric must withstand the strain of a working sail. Cotton has been cleaned, spun and woven before the cloth reaches port. A merchant's stock can supply the sail loft that sends a damaged galley back to sea.
