Ironwood is a trade name for exceptionally hard, dense timbers, rather than a single species of tree. Rough-cut pieces show their grain and colour on the end surfaces, and demand more effort from tools than softer woods.

Craftsmen choose them for work that requires strength and hardness. Buyers examine cracks, grain and dimensions to decide whether a piece is suitable. Several Philippine trees produce woods sold under this name. Even after felling and cutting, the cargo must be judged piece by piece.
