Cedar is a trade name used for several different timbers. Rough-cut pieces are judged by their grain, scent and dimensions, since the name alone says little about the work they will suit.

In the Americas, some trees called cedar provide trunks large enough to hollow into canoes. Smaller pieces go to joiners. How the timber is cut matters: a boatbuilder may want an intact section of trunk that would lose much of its usefulness if sawn into short lengths.
