Mahogany is a timber with golden, reddish or brown heartwood. It is shipped in rough-cut pieces; planing brings out the grain, and polishing deepens the colour. A dull piece on the quay can look quite different once a joiner has worked it.

Joiners and carvers use it for furniture, fittings and decorative work. Merchants apply the name to several woods from the Americas and Africa, so buyers examine the grain, colour and dimensions rather than relying on the name alone. The valuable heartwood is cut from felled trees and prepared for shipment to the workshop.
