Saltpetre is a white mineral salt, refined into crystals before sale. Its modest appearance belies its importance to powder makers and arsenals.

Mixed with sulphur and charcoal, it is an essential ingredient of gunpowder. Indian trade routes supply substantial quantities during the seventeenth century. Gathering and purification prepare the salt for shipment, linking its producers to military workshops far from the places where it is collected.
