Spanish sweet pepper is a fleshy, hollow fruit containing many seeds. Its mildness and substantial flesh distinguish it from both hot chillies and the small, hard grains of black pepper.

It flavours food with comparatively little burning heat. The fruit's appearance varies with the kind grown and its preparation after picking. Like other sweet peppers and chillies, it comes from American plants that spread into cultivation in Europe and beyond.
