Cubebs are small, brown, wrinkled berries with a persistent stalk or tail. This tail distinguishes them from black pepper when the spices are examined whole.

Apothecaries use the aromatic berries in their preparations, and their trade is closely associated with Java. The fruits are gathered and sun-dried, becoming dark and shrivelled. Grinding removes their most recognisable feature, so merchants can judge a lot more readily while the berries are still whole.
