Cloth arrives already woven, ready for a tailor or seamstress to cut. Unfolding a length reveals its thickness, texture and suppleness, qualities hidden while it is packed for transport.

Clothing makers and households buy fabrics for garments, shirts and linen. European and Asian workshops supply overseas markets with cloth whose fibres have already been prepared, spun and woven. A merchant must match each length to its buyer: fabric suited to a shirt may be of little use for a heavy outer garment.
