Ebony is a hard, dense timber with dark heartwood, sometimes a deep black. Rough pieces look dull; cutting and polishing bring out the lustre associated with fine ebony work.

Cabinetmakers use it in furniture, veneers and inlays. Several trees supply woods sold under this name, so buyers examine the actual grain and colour. A small quantity can give a strong dark accent to a much larger object, making the choice and cutting of each piece important in the workshop.
