Books travel in chests, either bound or as printed gatherings awaiting a binder. Opening a chest may reveal finished covers or stacks of folded, assembled sheets.

Schools, religious houses, libraries and private readers buy them for study, devotion and pleasure. Printing does not always complete the work: a buyer may have a book bound at its destination. The chest protects paper and ink that must survive the voyage before they can find their readers.
