Chinese porcelain arrives as bowls, dishes, cups, vases and other finished wares. Its pale, hard body can be translucent at the edges, and blue decoration beneath the glaze is especially recognisable.

It furnishes wealthy tables and rooms of display. Workshops such as those at King-Té-Ching shape, decorate and fire the pieces before export. Wooden chests can be packed with fragments of palm leaves to protect them at sea. Opening a chest reveals delicate ceramics nestled in rough packing material.
