Rosewood is a decorative timber ranging from brown to violet, often streaked with dark grain. Rough-cut pieces only hint at the patterns that sawing and polishing will reveal.

Cabinetmakers use it in fine furniture, especially as veneer: a thin layer can cover a much larger surface. Several trees supply wood traded under this name. Buyers examine colour and grain before choosing pieces for a workshop, where careful cutting determines how the finished object will show them.
