Wine travels in casks marked by the cooper's work and the wear of handling. The wood conceals a drink whose character depends on its vineyard, preparation and condition.

It supplies tables, ports and colonial settlements. Pressing the grapes and fermenting their juice produce wines ranging from coarse everyday drink to sought-after lots for wealthy buyers. Opening a cask gives the merchant a chance to judge what is actually inside before offering it to a customer.
