Gold dust consists of small grains and flakes of metal, unminted and ready to be weighed. A bright heap may catch the eye, but a balance determines how much gold is actually there.

It is used in trade and bought by goldsmiths. On the Gold Coast, Akan merchants weigh it with brass weights. Gathering and accumulating the grains brings them into trading networks long before they become jewellery or other worked objects. At the counter, the weights and scales are as important as the gold itself.
