Saffron is made from the red stigmas of crocus flowers. Dried into fine, fragrant threads, it weighs very little and is easily scattered. Closed boxes help protect this delicate cargo.

Cooks use it for colour and flavour, and apothecaries add it to their preparations. Each purple flower yields only a few stigmas, which must be picked by hand. Buyers look for fresh, dry red threads with little yellow material mixed in. A small box can hold the harvest of many flowers and hours of careful work.
