Muslin is a very fine, light cotton cloth, sometimes thin enough to see through. A folded piece gives little impression of its delicacy until it is opened against the light.

It is made into garments and veils, and may be embroidered. Indian weavers produce the fine yarn and even weave on which its reputation depends. Buyers feel the fabric and examine its consistency: a light length of cloth represents considerable work at the spinning wheel and loom.
