Rum is a strong spirit distilled from the products of sugar cane. It travels in casks, and the smell released when one is opened leaves little doubt about its strength.

Molasses and other products of sugar making are fermented and distilled to supply drinkers in ports and plantation settlements. In mid-seventeenth-century Barbados, the name kill-devil reflects the spirit's rough reputation. A cask links the sugar works to a further trade in strong drink.
