Iron is shipped as metal awaiting work and as finished goods such as ploughshares and horseshoes. Dark or rusted surfaces may conceal sound material that a smith can forge into something new.

Colonial farms, building sites and workshops all need iron. Ore has been smelted and the metal worked before loading; at its destination, a smith may repair a tool, fit a horse or make a missing part. Even a worn-out object can remain valuable for the metal it contains.
