Jade arrives as rough white, grey or greenish stone. Its soft-looking lustre emerges with polishing, but the material itself is tough and slow to work.

Chinese craftsmen turn it into ornaments, cups and objects for a scholar's study. Cutting, drilling and abrasion gradually produce the desired shape. Nephrite is central to seventeenth-century jade working. A rough stone on a merchant's counter may look modest beside a finished carving, though much of its eventual value depends on the labour still to come.
