Lace is openwork made from fine threads, with patterns formed as much by the gaps as by the thread itself. It travels as pieces and edgings, easily snagged and worth unfolding carefully.

Collars, cuffs, clothing and household linen are trimmed with it. Working with needles or bobbins, lacemakers spend many hours on material that weighs very little. Buyers examine the pattern, joins and evenness of the work, looking for flaws that may be almost invisible in a folded piece.
