Copper is a reddish-orange metal traded in pieces, sheets and finished objects that can be worked again. Craftsmen hammer it into shape or combine it with zinc to make brass.

In early Virginia, copper pieces also find buyers among Indigenous communities. Smelting and further working turn ore into usable metal before shipment. A damaged copper object can still be valuable to a metalworker: its shape may change, but the material can serve again.
