Export regions

Cloves are dried flower buds. Each has a rounded head above a short brown stalk, giving it the shape of a small nail. Whole buds are powerfully scented, with still more aroma released by grinding.

Cooks use them to flavour meat, and apothecaries in their preparations. The buds are picked from the clove tree before the flowers open, then dried. The Moluccas are central to the trade: a handful sold in a European market has travelled a long sea route from the trees where it was gathered.
