Samsams are worked agate ornaments, including beads and pendants. Cutting and polishing reveal the stone's brown, red and pale bands.

They are worn as adornments and used in exchange. Objects of this kind were carried aboard the Speaker, a pirate ship wrecked off Mauritius in 1702. Their makers have already selected, cut, drilled and polished the stone. A buyer receives finished pieces ready to be worn or strung together, rather than rough agate awaiting a lapidary.
