Building timber is shipped as beams, planks and other cut lengths. Shipyards prize long, sound pieces: a heap of offcuts cannot replace a beam of the right size.

Shipwrights and builders use it for construction and repairs, choosing each piece for its species, shape and dimensions. Oak and pine are especially important to shipbuilding. Felled trunks are squared or sawn before they reach port. Laid out on the quay, the cargo might supply a building frame, a floor or a ship waiting for repairs.
