This cargo includes animal hides and leather at different stages of preparation. A stiff hide awaiting treatment feels quite different from supple, finished leather. Merchants unfold the pieces to inspect their surfaces, flaws and condition.

Shoemakers, saddlers and bookbinders turn them into footwear, straps, baldrics and bindings. In the West Indies, cattle hunting also supplies the buccaneers' hide trade. Once an animal is skinned, its hide must be preserved and worked before it becomes a durable material for the workshop.
