Chintz is cotton cloth painted or printed with colourful patterns, often flowers. Opening a bale reveals finished designs ready to be made into clothing or furnishings.

Indian workshops, especially those along the Coromandel Coast, weave the cloth and apply the dyes and patterns. Traders carry it through Asian and European markets, where buyers choose fabric for garments, curtains and bed hangings. The appeal lies in the colours and design as well as the fineness of the cotton.
