Coral is a hard marine material produced by colonies of tiny animals. The red branching forms used by craftsmen may be shipped before they are cut or polished.

They are made into beads, jewellery and small objects. Red coral is also used in children's ornaments, which are believed to offer protection. Gathered branches are cut and worked to reveal smooth, coloured surfaces. Buyers examine the colour and structure of each lot, since different corals do not all yield the same material.
