Poppy seed consists of tiny, dry grains whose colour varies with the plant. This is a seed cargo, distinct from the poppy sap used to make opium.

The seeds are used as food and pressed for oil. They develop in great numbers inside the capsules left after flowering, then are gathered and separated from their husks. A lot can be sold whole or sent to the press, giving buyers quite different uses for the same small grains.
